Apodemus – Medical Research and Development
The research company Apodemus AB is focused on the discovery of a new group of viruses (Ljungan and Ljungan related viruses). The company has found evidence that this group of viruses may cause chronic infection in both animals and humans. A persistent infection is found in different cells and organs including muscle cells, nerve cells as well as both exocrine and endocrine gland cells. Clinical, laboratory and epidemiological findings suggest that Ljungan and Ljungan related viruses are involved in pregnancy-related diseases such as malformation, preeclampsia and intrauterine death as well as death in newborns. Infection later in life may result in metabolic diseases such as diabetes and in neurodegenerative diseases. The company´s research is directed towards development of diagnostics, treatment and preventive measures. Â
